"Libbani" is much more than a word: it is a legacy, a bond with the land and the sea, with hands that wove ropes and with the sun that slowly dried the wild grass on the rocks.
In Maratea, once upon a time, "libano" was the grass of the hills, rough and resistant, collected along the sunny slopes. It was worked with patience and skill to create strong ropes, used by fishermen and sailors. Those ropes took the name of libani, or in the local language "Libbani", a word that comes from afar, from the Arabic "libāno", which means rope: a thread that unites cultures, shores, peoples of the Mediterranean.
The intertwining of time: the tradition of the Libbàni in Maratea

The women of the port village harvested the plant at dawn or in winter. Protecting themselves with sickles and skins, they left the fibers to soak, then “mazzoccolavano” (beaten with wooden clubs) and wove them by hand.
The libbàni were produced in various thicknesses: thin for fishing, more robust for agriculture, construction and crafts (baskets, carpets, brooms).
Until the 1970s, processing was a fundamental activity: the Trotta Company of Maratea distributed ropes to the warehouses of La Spezia, Taranto and Messina, especially for mussel farming.
The introduction of polypropylene nets in the 1960s marked the progressive decline of production.
Rebirth and new developments

2019, as part of Maratea Capitale della Cultura: the Ri Corda project brought libbàni back to life with workshops, documentaries and a dedicated party
2023–2024, the Nuova Libbaneria Mediterranea was born, an all-female social enterprise that produces hand-woven eco-design objects, integrating experiential tourism and social inclusion
Recent initiatives include residencies for designers who reinterpret libbàni in a contemporary way
